Colombian President Warns 'I Would Resort to Weapons Again' if US Invades.

The US President and his Colombian counterpart have escalated the rhetoric of their exchange, heightening strains in their relations after American military units targeted Venezuela to remove the leader of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro from his position.

"He operates narcotics facilities and cocaine factories and is not going to be doing it very long," Trump added.

Rising Tensions and Claims

Talking to journalists over the weekend, Trump hinted at similar armed intervention against Colombia, asserting Colombia faces serious problems and led by a problematic figure who likes making the drug and selling it to the United States."

Although Colombia is the globe's biggest cocaine-producing country, no proof exists implicating Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is in any way involved in the trade.

A Deteriorating Alliance

Colombia was historically a staunch collaborator of Washington in the struggle against drug trafficking and received bipartisan support from American politicians, yet ties have soured markedly after Trump came to office.

Its narcotics trade is mainly overseen by illegal armed groups like the Clan del Golfo, another leftist insurgency and renegade units of the former Farc guerrillas, the majority of whose members disbanded following a landmark accord.

Colombia's Defiant Rebuttal

In response to a query whether armed intervention comparable to Venezuela was being considered regarding Colombia, Trump replied: "It sounds good to me personally."

Petro, a former leftist guerrilla who left armed struggle in the last century, rejected these allegations. "I am no an illegitimate leader and certainly not a narco," he stated.

"He comments uninformed. End the false accusations," he posted in a message.

"If they [the US] bomb peasants, they will transform into numerous insurgents in the hills. And should they arrest me, which a significant portion of the country admires and supports, they will provoke the powerful force of the people," he admonished.

From Insurgent to Statesman

The president dedicated some years as a young man belonging with the radical M-19 guerrilla group though it is believed that he never engaged in fighting. After demobilizing, he took part in drafting a new constitution in 1991 and later became a respected lawmaker. He served as mayor of the capital city before winning the nation's highest office.

"I swore not to touch arms again ... but for Colombia I will take up arms again," he affirmed.

Increased Security and Cross-Political Condemnation

Minister Pedro Sánchez announced that the national leader's protection team had been reinforced.

Many among Colombia’s political right have sided with Trump's stance, however, leaders spanning Colombian politics have condemned the notion of an invasion against their nation.

Bilateral and Economic Pressure

Washington revoked his travel authorization after he encouraged US troops to ignore unlawful commands. In October, the US enacted economic restrictions against the president, his wife and various associates.

At the same time as the US increased its forces in the Caribbean and bombing vessels thought to carry drugs to pressure Venezuela’s Maduro, US forces executed operations against vessels in Pacific waters adjacent to Colombia.
