EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
